About

I am a blogging newbie who decided to set up a page for my Spring 2011 Asian American Studies course at Queens College.  While my students gave me the incentive to make this page, I hope that it can also provide a wider forum to communicate and share ideas about activism and social justice.

I spent months and months trying to come up with a name, and decided to go with Earth Seed Education because, of course, Octavia Butler is my favorite writer and Parable of the Sower is my favorite book.  Like Lauren Olamina (the novel’s protagonist), I believe that we need to prepare for massive shifts that are already happening in our world.  In order to work for a new world, we need to transform our understandings of the lives that we–as a human community–live.  Lauren Olamina dedicated her life to developing and promoting a religion called Earthseed, and its mantra was “God is Change.”  While this blog is intended to be neither about God nor religion, I do want to offer a forum for thinking about education, possibilities for radical transformation, and preparing for a radically new world.
